Custom Aluminum CNC Bewerking Design Guidelines

Ontwerp voor maakbaarheid (DFM)

The following are guidelines to optimize your aluminum parts for CNC milling, reduce the costs, and improve lead times.

Tolerance Guidelines

Tight tolerances should only be specified where functional necessity dictates. Tighter tolerances cause machining time and cost to rise exponentially.

±0.005" Standaard
±0.001" Precisie
±0.0005" Ultra Precision

Wall Thickness

Thin walls may vibrate or deflect during machining. The thickness should, therefore, be maintained enough to provide dimensional stability.

0.040" Min. Recommended
0.020" With Support

Internal Corners

The internal corners must have a radius equal to or greater than the largest tool radius they will encounter. Smaller radii lead to lesser tool sizes and longer machining times.

R0.125" Recommended Min.
= Tool Radius Absolute Min.

Hole Depth

Standard drills function best in hole depths around 4x the diameter. Specialized tools and peck drilling cycles are required for depths >4x diameter.

≤4xD Standard Depth

Thread Design

Threads of aluminum are not particularly strong, so in the case of frequent assembly and/or higher loads, one might choose to go for threaded inserts (Helicoils).

1.5-2xD Inserted Depth
M2/ #2-56 Measured "Minimum" Size

Choose from our complete selection of surface treatments to enhance the aesthetics of your aluminum parts, give them better protection against corrosion, and make them more functional.

Type II Anodizing THE MOST USED

Type II Anodizing

The basic anodizing process plus the possibility to choose among different colors for decor. With the stacking of the layers being thinner, it has quite good protection against corrosion.

  • More than one shade offered
  • 0.0002" to 0.001" thickness
  • MIL-A-8625 Type II
Type III Hard Anodizing HIGH WEAR

Type III Hard Anodizing

A thick and hard oxide layer is created to resist wear and, in some cases, even surpass the wear resistance of the application, thus, making it fully suitable for demanding conditions.

  • HRC 60-70 hardness
  • 0.001" to 0.003" thickness
  • MIL-A-8625 Type III
Bead Blasting MATTE FINISH

Bead Blasting

A uniform matte finish that covers up the marks left by machining. It is widely used as the pre-treatment process prior to anodizing.

  • Typical Ra 1.6-3.2 µm
  • Cost-efficient
  • Satin like appearance
Powder Coating THICK COATING

Powder Coating

Long-lasting polymer coating with a wide range of colors. Outdoor equipment requiring thick protection can be painted with this because it is intended for such.

  • 0.002" to 0.006" thickness
  • RAL colors available
  • UV resistant
Chromate Conversion

Chromate Conversion (Alodine)

A lightweight coating that still lets electricity pass through. Moreover, it can act as an excellent primer for the next layers of paint because of its great adhesion.

  • Electricity passage still possible
  • MIL-DTL-5541 compliant
  • Golden or transparent choices
Electroless Nickel Plating WEAR + CORROSION

Electroless Nickel Plating

A layer of nickel that is applied uniformly and has very good resistance against both wear and corrosion. It is self-leveling so that the thickness throughout is always consistent.

  • Uniform thickness
  • 50 HRC hardness
  • Chemical resistant
CNC machined aluminum

CNC machined aluminum

Aluminum is a relatively easy metal to machine which makes it great for CNC-bewerking. Aluminum has useful properties for machining such as being lightweight, malleable, tractable and overall good durability. It being so light and easy to work with means that it can be used for a wide variety of applications. CNC machined Aluminum parts begin as a raw piece of metal which is cut down bit by bit to create a desired shape or object. This process is done most accurately with a CNC machine which can produce almost any three dimensional object designed via CAD software.

Aluminum CNC Parts FAQs

The cost of CNC machining Aluminum depends on the complexity and size of the part, as well as the specific type of Aluminum used. These variables directly affect the type of machine required, the production time, and the raw material costs.

We use machine learning algorithms to calculate the exact cost of any machinable part directly from your CAD file. Simply upload a CAD file to get an instant CNC machining quote.
CNC Aluminum machining is a manufacturing process that involves cutting a piece of raw Aluminum until the final desired shape or object remains.

CNC machines use Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) milling tools to remove unwanted geometries from a raw block of Aluminum. These machines are exceptionally precise, allowing for high accuracy and complex part geometries.
You can machine your Aluminum parts by uploading your CAD (.STL) files to our platform to receive an instant quote.

Once you submit your quote, the parts will be sent for production, and you will receive them within the quoted lead time.
